ROWING.
GISBORNE KOAVING CLUB.
By “ Eeefep..”
There was a large crowd of spectators last evening to witness the first race for the trophies presented by the President of the Gisborne Bowing Club (Mr A. F. Kennedy) for the trial fours competition. A considerable amount of interest is being taken in these contests on account of the representative crews being selected from the competitors to meet a crew from Napier and also the Poverty Bay Rowing Club’s representatives. After a good bit of delay the following crews left the shed : G. Buscko (str.), B. Smith (3), G. Evans (2) A. Coleman (bow), E. Bloomfield (cox), and B. DeLautour (str.), P. Keiha (3) 11. Hill (2), W. Dines (bow), Pi. Warren (cox).
As far as I could judge, the crews had had very little training, and the race was considered to be a certainty for DeLautour. Mr L. AViliiams officiated as starter, and succeeded in getting them away in good style, DeLautour’s crew gettin” the best of tbe start. Unfortunately, the No. 3 of Buscke’s crew broke his oar, and DeLautour consented to go back to the post for another start. This time Buseke’s crew got well off the mark, and succeeded in keeping the lead all the way, and won comfortably. This evening H. Symes’ crew will meet L. AA’illiams’ crew, and E. Eobinson’s will meet O. Hansen’s.
All the crews are in good order, especially Bobinson’s, and Williams’ men have also done hone3t training. I select AVilliams’ and Eobiuson’s crews to win their races this evening.
