. AND FIJIAN AFFAIRS.
I3y Tolograph—Press Association—Copyright Melbourne, Feb. 24.
Mr Duncan, Mayor of Suva, who is on a holiday visit to Australia, interviewed, said ho regarded tho Biblo-burning ns the most serious matter which had occurred in Fiji. Ninety por cent of the Fijians aro Methodists. It only required unable loader to cause a fierce struggle with great loss of life. Tho Methodists worked iiand in hand with tho Government, and would probably act on their advice, and not fight, but if the Testaments had been burned and unless this great insult to their religion was removed the result would bo such as would surprise those not knowing tho nativo character. Beneath the skin the Fijian was still a savage demon in fight, and once tho Methodists and Catholics came into conflict the result would be a very serious one. He could not help thinking that a mistake had been mado in appointing a Catholic Governor to a young Protestant colony. Mr Duncan spoko highly of tho commercial progress of Fiji. Ho characterised tho recent allegations in reference to tho tyrannical administration us amusing, and declared that tho F’ijians wero one of the most contented and happy pooplo in tho King's dominions.
