The Kaiser’s declaration in a recent letter to Admiral Hollman has caused a profound sensation throughout Germany. The Conservative press considers that the Kaiser holds the essentials of the Protestant faith. Liberal newspapers are satisfied that he upholds the freedom of scholarly researches and speculation, while maintaining the orthodox teaching for the people.
A cablegram received by the Times on Saturday stated“ The Kaiser, writing to Admiral Hollman, a member'of the Oriental Society, deprecates Professor Delitzsch’s conclusions. He believes in Revelations, and predicts that the kernel of the Old Testament will survive research. Religion was not the result of science, but the outpouring of man’s heart and being from intercourse with God.”
