BRITISH COLUMBIA’S APPEAL. (By Telegraph.) (Por R.M.S. Ventura, at Auckland.) Vancouvor (8.C.), Jan. 28. Iu response to the repeated demands of British Columbia the Federul Government has at last consented to levy a head tax on Chineso entering this provinco, which will practicully cxcludo Orientals altogether. Of late yours representations have boon made by deputations and mombers of tho House of Commons from tho Pacific coast regarding admission iu such largo numbers, hut little heed lias boon paid. A year ago tho tax was raisod from 50 dollars to 100 dollurs, and a Royal Commission was appointed to inquire into tho matter. The chairman of the Commission reported that the Chineso wero a stumbling block to tho progress of British Columbia, and degraded the labor interost. Premior Prior and Attornoy-Goncral Berta aro now at Ottawa, and interviewed tho Cabmot respecting tho Chinese, with tho rosult that a definite promise waß given that a further increase would be made in the head tax which would iu overyway meet tho wishes of the people of British Columbia. A fight for such a decision has been waged continuously for a number of years.
