DRINK IN FRANCE.
CONDEAINATION OF ABSINTHE AND OTHER BEVERAGES. ACTION BY PREMIER, (Per R.AI.S. Ventura at Auckland.) Paris, Jan. 28. In consequence of the reading of Dr. Laborde’s report at to-day’s meeting of the Academy of Aledicine, the fight against noxious liquors in France threatens to take on new and more militant form. In answer to tho request of the Prime Alinister to state clearly drinks the manufacture and sale of which ought absolutely to be forbidden in France, Dr Laborde condemns nearly all beverages consumed by hiß compatriots, but bestows an especial anathema on absinthe, which he declares is ruining both the souls and bodies of the French race. Although this is not the first time Government has been urged to prohibit the manufacture and sale of absinthe, it is the first time the Premier has demanded expert researches with a view to practical preventive measures. Brewers and manufacturers and distillers of liquors have begun to raise a fund to fight the Government. It is significant of the sincerity of Premier Combes’ movement that to-day the authoriti°s of the interior returned to the Perriod absinthe factory a case of 120 bottles which the firm had contributed for the relief of the starving.
