ENGLISH CRICKETERS.

THE SOUTHLAND MATCH. Per Press Association. Invercargill, last night. The cricket match botween Lord Hawke’s team and Southland began today in doubtful weathor. Rain fell before daybreak, but the wicket was protected, and the pitch was very fair. Southland batted first, and put together 87, the chief scorers being Tapley 25, Wilson 13, Kean 11, Poole 10. Threo playors had no score. It was expected that tho Englishmen would completely run over tho local team, but they were all out for 107, tho bowling of Taylor and Keenan being good. At tho close of tho day, in a very bad light, Southland had lost four wickets for 17. The Englishmen’s holding was excellent, but even with fifteen men Southland compared favorably. Bosaoquet batted well, but played several flukey stickers. Taylor gave the impression of being the best bat. Ho was given out for a doubtful catch at the wickets. The English score was as follows: —
