Fire Brigades.
Per Press Association, Auckland, last night. In reply to a municipal deputation, which urged that Government and tho insurance companies should contribute to the Auckland Fire Brigade, which now costs £2600 a year, against £6OO previously, the Premier said he thought the insurance companies should contribute, but he did not see wbv Government should do so unless they had property in the district, and then it would be a very small proportion. Contributions by insurance companies were provided for in the State Fire Insurance Bill. One hundred and sixty-nine centenarians died last year in Ireland. Earl Grey's public-house trust scheme is to be applied to Gloucestershire. Hughenden Manor, the residence of tho late Lord Beaconslield, is to be let. One hundred and forty-one divorces were granted in Scotland last year, Potton, Bedfordshire, has 80 publichouses for a population of 2041. No deaths from hydrophobia have occurred in Ireland for three years. Frog skin makes the toughest leather known in proportion to its thickness. Baron von Krieghammer, the AustroHungarian Minister of War. has resigned. Three thousand men are employed in the Aberdeenshire granite .quarries.
