REVENUE RETURNS. By Telegraph—Press Association— Auckland, last night. The Collector of Customs in his annual report, states that the revenue of the port of Auckland for 1002 amouuted to H 01,228, far in excess of the previous year. The exports were .£2,110,870, an increase of £190,Q80. The increased export of llax, butter, frozen meats, gold, silver, live stock, maize, was very marked. The dairying industry is progressing marvellously. MR SEDDON. The Premier was occupied with deputations this morning. This afternoon the Mayor presents to Mr Scddon the Citizens’ Purse. MEAT CONTRACT. The Premier has received a cable message from the Hon. W. P Reeves, AgentGeneral, dated London, February 15 : “ In answer to your telegram ou February 12th, War Office states that the results of the competition for meat have not yet been received from South \frica. l’hore is no reason to think any alterations have been made in the conditions of tonder. Edward Goodfellow, a groom, whilo driving from Pavaparaumu to Paikakariki, was killed by a kick from a horse he was driving. Tho Christchurch Tramways Board has appointed Mr F. 11. Chamberlain, who has just completed the installation of the Sydney electrical tramways, as engineer to draft a scheme for an electrical system here, for the term of one year. Mr ChamberlaiD arrives at Christchurch at the beginning of March. He was selected by the Railway Commissioners to instal tho Sydney tramway machinery on account of his extensive experience, extending over 14 years in America. The Chief Commissioner very highly recommends his work in Sydney. , SENT TO SUPREME COURT. Dunedin, last night. Angus McNeill, charged with having wounded Charles Anderson on February 2, was committed for trial. THE WARDS AND MELBA, Invercargill, last night. Sir Joseph and Lady Ward boarded the Moeraki at the Bluff this morning, and the former extended to Madame Melba a hearty welcome to the colony. Melba is in excellent health, and had a pleasant trip across from Hobart. A large number of people assembled at Invercargill station to get a glimpse of the famous singer, who left in a special car by the express for Dunedin. A FIRE. Hokitika, last night. Brown’s accommodation house at Ross road was totally destroyed by fire at midnight. Nothing was saved. The inmates escaped as they stood up. The cause of the fire is unknown. Everything was left apparently safe when locked up. The insurances are: Northern £l5O, Imperial £l5O.
