SERIOUS BUSH FIRES IN NEW SOUTH WALES.
SETTLERS ABANDON THEIR HOMES.
By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright^ Roceivcd 10.2 p.m., Fob. 16. Sydney, Fob. 16. As the outcome of tho dry weather and in some cases by tho caroless use of firo, serious bush fires aro raging iu various parts.
It is statod that at Nelson Bay the firo destroyed several farms, and swept through a eomotory. Tho firo is still burning and approaching the telegraph lines. Three farms wore demolished at Rookwell, the firo being started by boys who were rabbiting. At Dungog tho firo swopt closo to tho town, destroying tho grandstand and sheds at tho racecourse. Tho Church of England, rectory, and buildings wero saved after a hard fight. Tho flames aprond to a rosidonce near the racocourso and destroyed it.
Tho hospita’ containing a number of fevor patients, was saved with difficulty. Hundreds of horses and cattlo stampeded into town. As the day advanced tho wind grow stronger, and drove tho firo into' tho south end of the townships. At Hanloy’s Creek, a few miles south of Dungog, tho pooplo wore terror-stricken aud abandoned their homes on account of tho flames.
In contrast to this an exceedingly cold snap is occurring at Kiandra, heavy snow falling to-day. The glass stands at 35.
