POLITICAL PICNIC

By Telegraph—Press Association. Carterton, last night. A complimentary picnic was tendered to Mr W. C. Buqhanan at Ahiakonka, near Carterton yesterday, to commemorate his return to Parliament as the Wairarapa representative for the seventh tim'o. It was the biggest affair of the kidd over hold in the Valley. Capital woathor prevailed, and the attendance is estimated at betweon threo and five thousand. Tho scone on the grounds was one of great magnificence. In addition to Mr Buchanan the following guests were presont : Messrs J. Aitken, ivI.H.R. for Wellington, J. Duthio, M.H.R. for Wellington, and W. Frasor, M.H.R. for the Lakes district. Amongst apologios received were ones from Sir Wm. Russell, Hons. Duncan, Mills, McGowan, Hall-Jones, Mr Atkinson, and the Premier. Eloquent addresses wore delivered by the membors present and others. Sports of all descriptions wore afterwards proceeded with. Tho toasts of Mr Buchanan’s health and the Parliament of New Zealand wore enthusiastically honored. Refreshments and everything were provided gratis, but tho difficulty of catering for the multifarious requiromonts of tho crowd wore expeditiously and successfully carried out. The arrangements were admirable. Not a single accidont occurred.
