THE CRICKET EPISODE

By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, lust night. In roferenco to tho criekot episode, Mr A. E. G. Rhodes, the president of tho Cricket Council, has received a letter from Mr Bosanquet. stating that ho bowled tho ball to Pearce, which pitched on the leg side of his wickets. Tho batsman tried to hit it and missed it. He heard a sound as if the ball had hit tho wicket, and Whatman said " Well bowled.” Warnor, at mid-on, and Hargreaves, at point, both of whom could see what happened, said the same, and walkod towurds the wicket. J'oarco started to walk away, thinking ho was bowled, when Sims said “ You Had better appoal.” Poarce then roturned to his ground and an appoal was mado to the umpiro (Bannerman), who was quite unable to seo, owing to Pearco being between him and tho wicket. Tho decision was therefore roferred to Sponcor, who said that ho also had not soeri what occurred. Pearco then said, “ Well, I was out, I had bettor go,” and started to walk uway, but it was pointed out to him that tho matter had been referred to tho umpires, and thoreforo ho could not go till one of them gavo him out. After some time, Warnor requested Bosanquet to go on with the over, which he did. He then addressed tho remark to Sims for which ho had since apologised. Whatman then mado remarks to tho umpire, for which ho had also apologised, and they hoped the matter was at an end so far as thoy were concerned. It soemed to him to be purely a personal matter betweon Sims and himsolf, and tho same applied to Whatman's remarks, and it was much to bo regretted that the matter had been publicly tuken up. They were sorty that tho tour they had all onjoyed so much should be marrod by any unfortunate incident, and hoped that tho pleasant relations which have hitherto existed with teams they had met might be continued.
