NEW PLYMOUTH NEWS.

A DASTARDLY ACTION. {Per Press Association)* New Plymouth, last night. What appears to have been an attempt to derail tfie train from town to tfie breakwater occurred this evening. On nearing the breakwater the engine came in contact with an obstruction. Fortunately it only jumped and skidded some little distance, not leaving the rails. Inspection proved that a solid angle iron had evidently been laid on the rails, but had eventually cleared off the track. Had the train left the rails considerable damage would probably have been done. FREE EDUCATION. Tho Education Board to-day recorded its appreciation of the action of the Minister in providing free secondary education under the regulation issued in December last.
