In the Chamber of Deputies, M. Coombos refused to entertain M. Alard’s proposals to abolish the concordat, contending that the State needed religion. Ho said the masses were not satisfied with simply moral ideals. Mr Berthelot’s motion for submission of the question of separation of the Church and State to a referendum was referred to a committee, despite M. Coombes’ declaration that such a separation would cause difficulties in the Bepublic.
