.SCATHING REMARKS BY Ml HAWKINS,
(Per Press Association.) GREYMOUTH, last night
AI; an inquest to-day on the body of Thomas Wyatt, the evidenee showed that lie was drunk and had been seen co ming out of a public bouse near the wharf shortly before his death. The jury returned a verdict that lie was drowned while apparently under the influence of liquor. The coroner, Mr Hawkins, in scathing terms denounced the liquor traffic, lie said it was directly responsible for this man’s death, that reform was necessary, and that the Magistrate should alone constitute the Licensing Committee.
NAPIER, last night
At the inquest on .James Gormlcy, found dead in a cottage, the medical evidence attributed death to fatty degeneration of the heart, accelerated by excessive drinking. Deceased came to town three weeks since with £76, nearly, the whole of which disappeared. Later.—A verdict was returned, in accordance with the medical evidence, that deceased died from fatty degeneration of the heart of long standing, probably hastened by too free indulgence in intoxicants within the last month.
