A committee meeting of the Poverty Bay Horticultural Society will be hold at eight o’clock to-morrow evening. The Wairarapa Times in its sporting column states that 11 Povoriy Bay is still wrestling with the town clock problem.” The Metropolitan Jockey Club has consented to the assumed names of “ Richard York ” and “ G. Morse.”
A spscial train will be put on this afternoon for the benefit of holiday makers who desire to have a run into the country. Messrs Hamon and Smith have started business in Gisborne as Financial, Land, and Commission Agents, in the olfices lately occupied by Messrs Stubbs and Co. At a meeting of the Metropolitan Jockey Club Committee it was decided to vote £l2 from the Benevolent Fund to J. Duff, who was injured at the races in this district.
Attention is again referred to tho clear ing sale of toys, fancy goods, musical in struinonts, otc., at C. I. Lewiss. The sale only continues until the end of this month.
Tho Matron" of the Hospital, Miss Stewart, acknowledges with thanks gifts of fruit from Mrs Holden, vegetables from Mr T. Steele, located waters from Messrs Lucas and Barry, old linen from Mrs J. On-; also Christmas cakes, fruit and flowers from other friends. The Ballance Tent, No. 12,1.0. R., S.U., met last evening, Bro. M. Hoyle, Deputy Ruler, presiding. One new member was proposed. A correspondent writes noticing the fact that Dr DeLislo intends paying a visit to Waihirere, and adds: “Could not the Borough Council in the present dry season arrange for a practical man to go up aud test the flow at Waihirere? This would give a good idea, to pcoplo who voted for or against the scheme. lam afraid that it would be disheartening to some who supported it, but the simplo truth should he made known.” The half-yearly summoned meeting of the Gisborne Tent, No. 54, 1.0.1!., S.U.. was held in the Tent room last evening, Bro. E. Ebeliug, Chief llaler, prosiding, There was a large attendance of the mom hers. The following officers were elected and installed for the ensuing half-year: Past Chief Ruler, Bro. E. Ebeling : Chief Ruler, Bro. 3. Goldsworthy; Deputy Ruler, Bro. A. J. Cooper; Secretary, Bro. M. G. Nasmith, jnr., P.C.R.; Treasurer, Bro. J. Pcckover (re-elected); Minute Secretary, Bro. A. W. link, P-C.R- (re elected); Cash Steward, Bio. Anderson Book Steward, Bro. H. Murray; Levite Bro. Graham; Guardian, Bro. A. Pool; Right Supporter of Chief Ruler, Bro. H, Webb, P.C.R.; Left Supporter, Bro. C, Cooper, One new member was initiated. The monthly meeting of the Hospital Trustees was to have been held last night. There were present: Messrs Harding (in the chair), Joyce, Warren, and -Johnston. There not being a quorum the business was confined to the reports and accounts. The monthly report showed : Remaining from last month 21, admitted since 21, discharged 23, deaths 3, remaining at date 16. There are now two fever cases under treatment. Mr Warren said that the report was very satisfactory for the time of the year. The statement of accounts showed: Receipts (including requisition to December, 1902, £-210), £276 2s ; disbursements (bank overdraft of 17th December 11113 7d and accounts passed £lOl 2s 7d), £215 Is 2d; credit balance January 14, £6l Os lOd. Accounts amounting to £lls 3s 10d were passed for payment- The fees received amounted to £2O 15s, and donations to /10 16s. The donations were: Sister Eliza and William Richardson, 1 each £1; T. A. Coleman and A. T. Coleman, each ss; W. P. Finneran aud A\m. Pettie, each £2 2s; J- A- Harding and Little Bros., each £1 Is; Win. Garman, 2s 6d; John Frrguson (shearers’ list) £i 17s fid: total, £lO 16s. The Chairman said that the financial position was very satisfactory compared with what it had been. The yisiting Committee, Messrs Johnston and Nolan, reported that everything was proceeding satisfactorily, Messrs Joyce and Maefarlane were appointed a Yisitiug Committee for the euuuing tfuuth.

The White-house Bioscope Company conciuded ils town season last night, and 'o-d.iy sets out on a tour of the country, commencing with Tolago Bay. At Inglewood. Taranaki, the average rainfall for the last sixteen years has been 1104 inches, Gisborne people would like a turn of the tap just now.
The existence of a water-famine in Wanganui recently caused tho Borough supply to be shut off three times a day for two or three hours each time. At Palmerston North no less than 75 informations have been laid against parents for neglecting to send their children to school.
. Some ilaxmillers in the Mnnawatu district are paying as high as 22s 6d per ton for green flax as royalty for the right of cutting. A consignment of 2b rams arrived from Dunedin yesterday morning. They were consigned to Messrs Common, Shelton, and Co., and were for Mr .John Clark.
A former resident of Napier now living at Gisborne lias been giving tins place a bad name through the Napiei papers, owing to the want oi water and drainage.
Bv the steamer yesterday morning, the Rev. Mr Cuote arrived to take temporary charge of the Turanga district., recently vacated by Canon Fox.
The. weather generally throughout the colony yesterday was line, Tauranga excepted, hail falling there. No forecast of ram was made yesterday by the Government meteorologist. That pest of the farmer, the Hessian tlv (says the Oamaru Mail) has made its appearance in some wheat paddocks out Papakaio way, though, fortunately, no great damage has been done so far.

In consequence of the alterations of the dates of tho Dannovirko Jockey Clu'o’.s meeting, it was decided to add to the conditions of tho Hawke’s Bay Joekey Club a autumn programme : “ That the winner of any race after the declaration of weights to carry 71b penalty ; of two or more races, 101 b penalty.” A statement recently going the rounds about consecutive teachers at a Taranaki school having committed suicide was evidently the work of a heartless wit. _A journal in the district indignantly denies that three teachers committed suicide, and adds: “The two teachers immediately preceding Mr Robortson were ladies, and both resigned to get married.”
Robert Midd.eton (a Rangiora baker, who died leaving a delicate wife and’ three children quite unprovided lor) was carrying a bucket of water, when his arm was scratched as he entered a doorway. Only the skin was grazed. He consulted a chemist and medical men, and applied embrocation, but died after removal to the hospital.
The mail yesterday morning brought; good tidings for the Cook, County Council, in the. shape of a further Government grant ot £IOO for. the Tolago Bay bridge, making the total £BOO, and the loan of £2,500 will shorth he available. Another £3OO was received for the Mangatu road, upon which £2,500 has recently been spent in construction.
The annual meeting of the New Zealand Central District of tho Independent Order of llechabites is to be held at Christchurch on Tuesday, February 10th. At tho meeting of the Gisborne Tent last evening the Secretary, Bro. M. G. Nasmith, jnr., 1’.C.11,, was appointed to represent the Tent at tho meeting, while Sister W. Wallace, Secretary of tho Star of New Zealand Tent, represents the ladies’ Tent. We understand that the local Tent has no less than 41 items of business on the business paper lor the meeting.
At the meeting of the Ballance Tent last evening the presentation of the prize offered by the District Officers to tho member who introduced the most candidates during the year took place. The Superintendent, Bro. Kretchmer, in presenting the prize to the winner, Bro. M. Doyle, referred to that brother's energy in securing new members, and hoped that even more members may be . initiated during the coming year. Bro. Doyle very modestly expressed surprise at his having won the prize* The prize was a handsomo silver modal, with the letters “ LO.R.” on one side and the words “ District Brize for 1902 ” on the other.
q’wo important, subjects were to have been dealt with at the meeting oi the Hospital'Trustees lasi evening. One was the proposal to allow the operating-room to be usect for major operations, with the medical officer’s consent, by other doctors. The other matter was in regard to a Friendl) Societies’ proposal re Lodge patients. As there was no quorum, the subjects could not be dealt with. The Chairman (Mr Harding) stated that it was a pity they did not have a full meet ng to discuss these questions,, he himself had stayed in Gisborne on this account when he would like to have got away. No doubt, the Friendly Societies would like their subject decided as soon as possible. Messrs Warren and Johnston also mentioned that it was desirable to have the subjects decided as soon as they could get a good meeting; the .Secretary mentioned that some of the Trustees were out of town. It was agreed, on the motion of the Chairman, that a special meeting should be held on that day fortnight, 28th January, to deal with the two subjects.
