WAIAPU COUNTY COUNCIL.
Tho usual monthly meeting of th Waiapu County Council was held yestoi day. There rvero presontMessrs Sher wood (chairman), Wallis, Knox, A. B Williams, and X. 8. Williams. The minutes of last meeting were reac and confirmed, and tho outgoing corres pondence was road. _ , A telegram was received from tho Land! Surveyor, Napier, stating that tho specifications for tho Tokomaru-Tarakau road Tawhareparac, Crown Lauds grant has boon approved. Ileceived. A lotter from tho Lands Department, Napior, stating that Mr George Powell’s rent had been paid for survey foe, and no land rovenuo would accrue until that was oxbausted. ltecoived. A lettor was received from Dr McGregor, Inspector-General of Hospitals, in reply to a communication from tho Council with roforonco to the necessity of a Hospital in tho district, and stating that tho muttor would receivo consideration. Keeoived, A letter was rccoived from the Marino Dopartmont stating that tho suggestion to appoint a member of tho Council to the Gisborne Harbor Board would be considered when the appointments wero boing made. Deceived. A telegram was receivod from Mr A. T. Ngata stating that tho Council’s proposal to collect both tho European and Native dog tax for tho ensuing year had boen agreed to by the Maori Council. — ltecoived. Tho Secretary to the Treasury wrote, applying for payment of £2lO Ids 4d for arrears of intorest on special loan. — Keeoived.
Tho Chief Surveyor, Napier, wrote acknowledging tho application of tho Council to have tho Ahikouka No. 1 block specified for a recreation rosorvo. Tho Commissioner of Crown Lands wrote stating that tho proposal for tho expenditure of £B9 8s la accrued land revenue had boon approved of. —lteceivod. A letter was received from Mr D. N. McMillan, Road Surveyor, covering tho approved specifications for tho HikuwaiPakariki road.—Recoived. A lotter was received from tho Secretary to tho Troasury Department, stating that grants should bo Bpent on permanent work, and not for ordinary ropairs.— Received.
A letter was received from Mr A. F. Kennedy, informing the Council that Cr Wallis had been appointed a member of the Board of Hospital Trustees. —Received.
A letter was received from Mr Witty, tho Secretary of tho Gisborno Harbor Board, requesting to bo supplied with the roll of electors entitled to vote at tho forthcoming Board oloction. It was decided to reply that the roll forwarded by Mr Witty did not apply to tho Waiapu County, and suggesting that the Harbor Board should have the required information compiled at their own expenso. The Engineer’s report dealing with work was then read, aftor which the Council wont into committee to open tenders. T. S. McCracken’s tender was acceptod for contract No. 13, and McNeill and Son’s for No. 14.
Cr A. B. Williams asked when the Engineer would be able to lay out the work on Puaterokia. The Engineer said that the work was second on his list, and would be gone on with when the works required on the Pakiakani track had been laid out. Cr T. B. Williams said that it would be advisahlo to get tho scrub on the Pukttiki-
pariki track burned, as the season waß favorablo for that being done. Cr Wallis proposed that Cr A. B. Williams attend to the matter, which was seconded by Cr T. 8. Williams and car-
ried. Cr A. B. Williams proposed that the Engineer bo instructed to drain the slips in tho Waipito stream valley as sjon as arrangements for the purpose could be made. This was soconded by Cr Wallis and carried.
Cr Knox proposed that tho road near tho Sea View Hotel bo repaired ; soconded by Cr T. 8. Williams, and car
riod. . The Chairman proposed that the Iningiahorehore track be formed, the cost to bo defrayed out of the laud revenue, and any deficiency to be charged to the Waiapu riding. The motion waa seconded by Or T. S. Williams and carried. On the motion of tho Chairman, sec onded by Cr Wallis, Mr Wm. McElroy was appointed registrar of dogs for the ensuing year.
PERSONAL. Mr C. Butler, the popular proprietor o* tho Rose Hotel, Port Awanui, has beon on a visit to Gisborne for a few days. Mr E. Hoyto, the travelling representative of tho Auckland firm of Messrs Sharland and Co., arrived in Gisborne on Monday. Mr Hoyte was a passengor by tho Oinapero to Port Awanui, after which he completed his journey on horseback. He reports that tho present state of the weather is telling very much along the
coast. Tho peoplo on tho Coast are to be given a treat during tho next few days. Mr Whitehouse, of tho Bioscope Company, ha 3 resolvod to make a tour of the Coast,
end the company can be recommended as tho best thing of the kind that has ever travelled in that direction. Mr Whitohouse deserves every encouragement in his tour, and all who desire to see a firstclass exhibition are recommended to seize the opportunity. Mr G. Cotterill has joined his uncle on tho Coast, and intends obtaining experience in station management. Coast residents will bo pleased to hoar that this young gentleman, prior to leaving with one of the late contingents for the South Afrioan war, w|ts one of Napier’s most promising orickoters. MANGAHANEA RACECOURSE. The present racecourse, Mangahanoa, is much more favorably situated than th e old course. Thoro is a good coach road all tho way from Gisborne to the present courso, it is within a few miles of Tuparoa and connected by a splendid love! road. It also has tho advantage of not being so far from Gisborne aB last year’s course.
TOKOMARU BAY v. TOLAGO BAY. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Bay commenced the first match of their tour up the Coast against the v- Tokomaru team on January 7th. Play began about eleven o’clock. WAIPIRO BAY. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Beautiful weathor prevailed last Friday, when a very intorosting match was played at Mr A. B. Williams’ Takapau utation, hot ween tho representatives of the Tolago Bay Cricket Club and tho local one. The Taiago eleven were on tho whole a vory fair combination, but wcrounablo to stand before tho bowling of Durrant and Beale. Durrant’s form was excellent, and did splendid service to tho local representatives. For tho visiting team Reeves and Murphy did best work with tho ball. TOKOMARU BAY. (From Our Own Correspondent.)
On Monday a very interesting game of cricket was played between North and South Waiapu, Waipiro and Tuparoa v. Tolago aud Tokomaru. There was a good attendance of spectators, and the match was a good one throughout. A first-class wicket was provided by the Tokomaru Club. Tho scores were :

TUPAROA, (From Our Own Correspondent.) The following match was played at Matahiia between Tolago Bay and Tuparoa, the former being victorious by 24 runs. For the visitors G. Reynolds IS and E. Reeves 15 were the chiof scores, tho total being 97. For Tuparoa Mr K. S. Williams 20 and H. Seidel 17 helped to make up the total' of 63. Tolago again wont in and made 138, W. Reeves 39, M. 1 Murphy IS, and J. R. Murphy 16. Tuparoa then wont in, and had one wicket down for 15 when time was called. For Tolago Bay Reeves did most of the destruction among tho Tuparoa wickets, and Mr G. O. Jackson bowled woll for Tuparoa, taking
the greatest amount of wickets. Mr K. S. Williams and tho cricket committee provided a good lunch, and had it- not been for a strong wind a more perfect day could not havo been wished for, everyone having thoroughly enjoyed the sport.
