Mr discussion with leading citizens oi Johannesburg resulted in an agreement for an Imperial guarantee of a public w.orks loan of thirty millions, the war contribution to be fixed at thirty millions. An understanding was also reached on the labor question.
The Cape Parliament has prorogued till April Kith.
Received 11.15 p.m., January 11. The Times heartily congratulates Mr Chamberlain on arranging a _ voluntary war contribution. The Standard says that if the settlement was somewhat indulgent to the Hand, yet it wih in the long run prove advantageous to highest Imperial interests in South Africa. The Rand has shown its wisdom and patriotism in the matter.
