Palmerston North, last night. In the second round at the tournament Gisborne met Auckland, and all the members of the team playing in good style, the present holders of the championship wero able to inflict a heavy defeat on their opponents, the score being 23 to 10. In tho third round Gisborno met Upper Plains, whom they easily defeated by 26 to 23. In the fourth round Gisborne had a ding doDg game with Carterton, and in the last head they gained a victory by three points, the score being 21 to 18. In the fifth round tho match between Gisborne and Palmerston North was the most interesting fixture. In the first head Gisborne scored four, hut in the second head, when lying two, Ponsford carried the jack and gave Palmoisbon two. Palmerston caught their opponents, and in one head scoring six, they soon established a lead of a dozen points. Steady play on the part of Ponsford and Gaudin reduced the score to within throo points, when Palmerston again got in three points, and increasing their lead in the last three heads, won by 15 to 16. The match was played on the new green, which was most erratic, and loth teams were fairly puzzled in getting to tho jack. Whataupoko went all to pieces in their mater. against Hastings, tUe score being 23 to 8. In tho third round they had a bye, and in the fourth thoy defeated Auckland by a substantial majority. In the uftb round Simson’s team had an easy victory over Upper Plains. Haiti's only victory was against Strat ford, and as the latter -had been the means of Wellington’s downfall the win was all She more meritorious. To-morrow Gisborne plays Wanganui, Dannevirke, and Pousonby ; Whataupoko nests Carterton, Palmerston, and Wanjanui.
