The annual meeting of the Turanganui Public Library was bold last night, the President (Rev. H. Williams) being in tbo chair.
The balance-sheet presented showed; Beceipts, J 6150 10s lid; balance in bank 80th June, 1902, 1182 7s 6d; liabilities, nil; expenditure, £Si Os 7d; balance in bank December, 1902, X4B 17s ; assets, XS6I 17s.
The annual report was as follows : “ Your Committee has much pleasure in reporting the Library to be in a flourishing state. The membership has increased since the presentation of the report of the last general meeting six months ago from 182 to 212. During the same period 363 books have been procured, and a number of old and damaged ones disposed of, leaving the total number of .8626 in the Library. During the half-year additional shelving has been erected and the floor of the reading room covered with linoleum at a cost of £lB. This has added to the comfort and appearance of the Library. Miss Beere continues to give satisfaction in the discharge of her duties as Librarian. Since November loth the Library has been opened on Satu.days at 10 a.m., an arrangement which has proved a great convenience, especially to country subscribers. The catalogue has been in hand for some time, but was unfortunately delayed by the death of Mr Cartright, who was engaged in transcribing it. It is hoped, however, that it will soon be in the hands of the printer, and its publication should follow shortly. Attention is drawn to the small support accorded to the Library by means of voluntary subscriptions in the reading room, the total amount in the box at the end of six months being only 8s 4d. If more liberal assistance wore received from this source additional papers might be placed upon the table,” Tho President said that the committee wore to be congratulated on the sound financial basis of the institution. He mentioned that no reply had yet been received from Mr Carnegie ; in any case it would bo well to have an extension of
cne ounaing, ouc ne tnougnc it oetter to I await a reply before so deciding. He ’ ‘arms 0 f p ra i se to the excellent - v.ihrarian (Miss manner in which tuu Beere) had carried out her duties, ne proposed the adoption of the report and balance-sheet.
