IIUTT LOAN PROPOSALS,

The loan proposals, in volving £1.7.000 for the Council Chambers, street improvements. drainage, etc., have been carried by the ratepayers of Lower Hutt. A LICENSING CASE. At the Lower llutt Court Dr. Macarthur, S.M.. recorded a conviction against a publican who pleaded guilty to selling liquor on election day, and ordered tho defendant to pay 27s and costs. Lie took a lenient view of the ease, as defendant had admitted the efivnee, and it was the first case of the kind. FIRI-i IN LAMBTOX QUAY. A fire broke out to night in Hannah and Co.'s hoot store in I.tmibton Quay. The premises are* three stories high, and Trevcthick, brush manufacturer, occupied the top fiat.* The roc-f and Trevc-thick’s stocks were damaged by fire, and Hannah's stock by water. The insurances on the building are £IOOO, and on Hannah's stock £IO,OOO in the New Zealand Office, which is re insured in other otliccs. Trevcthick is insured in the South British. VICTORIA COLLEGE. The Victoria College Council has decided to advertise for a professor of biology. The committee to whom the question of establishing a course of civil engineering had been referred, reported that though there was a considerable demand for instruction in this direction, there was more urgent demand to establish a chair of biology. AN OLD RESIDENT.

Mr David Wilkinson, one of the oldest identities of Wellington, died to night, aged 92 years, lie arrived by the ship Olympia in 1841.
