NATIVE LAND BOARD.
Astonishment has been expressed at the long delay that has taken place in regard to the appointments to the East Coast Trust Board, set up some months ago to deal with the Carroll and Wi Pere trust lands. Rumors are busy as to the appointments contemplated by the Government, but one that we utterly refuse to bcliove is that the brother of the Native Minister is to be one of the members. Such an appointment would not, we consider, be in tho interests of the Board, moro especially considering tho closo connection that the Hon. James Carroll has had with tho trust. If there is any chance of tho Board being a success it must be a capable and also an independent body, and one that will set its foot on tho courso of proceedings that have hitherto guided the trust. Presumably the difficulty in tho impecunious stato of the trust is to got suitable persons to act on the Board. We hope to find that no local persons will be appointed, and that the Government will exercise the greatest care and discretion in regard to tho iitness of the gentlemen selected. We feel sure that tho only hope of saving anything for the natives is to have the most capable administration, and even then the prospect os tho Maoris getting much is a very poor one indeed.
