CO-OPERATIVE DAIRYING.
There should ie general satisfaction throughout ihe district at ihe outcome of the meeting of dairy farmers held at Makauri last night. It is evident that the co-operative system of managing dairy factories is the popular one ami it is satisfactory; to note that the settlers are taking" such determined efforts to work the industry to the best advantage. The Kia Ora Factory Jam been so well conducted by Mr McGregor that some may; think it; would he better to continue "it as a proprietory; concern, but by the "step taken the settlers will have the advantage of a great deal that has emanated from Mr McGregor's own brain and is based on long experience. Mr McGregor is a shrewd man, who knows that the cooperative principle is now the prevailing sentiment, and has justified itself by great success in oilier parts oft lie colony, indeed, the fear is that, after so much has been heard in favor of the co-operative system, some settlers may anticipate a greater success than is fairly reasonable. If must not be thought that combination, though such an important element towards success, completely brushes aside all the Worries of business. Jiut co-operation is a great step forward, and if the suppliers take care, as they have been doing in this district, that- an experienced" and careful manager is placed at the head of affairs, they can hardly fail to achieve success. It is a pity that the settlers could not have adopted some scheme by which the two factories could have been run under the one managementlml as there does not seem to he any likelihood of any tiling being accomplished in that, direction, there is certainly no grounds for antagonism between the two. There should rather lie a friendly rivalry as to which can do the best, for the dairymen, in doing which they will also be doing the best, for the district. It is pleasing to note that so much interest is being taken in the industry, the development of which is steadily progressing, although not so fast as we should like to see. The growth of the industry should, however, be facilitated by the adoption of the co-operative system. As to the decision to convert the Kia Ora Factory into a co-operative concern, we take the opportunity cy' congratulating the suppliers who have taken this step, and to wisli them all the success that the name implies^
