IMPORTANT CONFERENCE
STEAMSHIP OWNERS AND
SEAMEN
By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright Sydney, Dec. 9. A conference of the Steamship Owners’ Federation and the Federation Seamen’s Union has opened with the object of framing a wording agreement for the coming year. Under the existing agreement entered into in June last, and which forms the basis of the conference, the Seamen’s Union bound themselves to accept reduction of at least 10 shillings per month provided that trade in the meantime did not improve, the reduction to date from the end of January next. The Press representatives are not admitted. The question at issue us to whether the trade conditions are such as to warrant a reduction was discussed at great length. The conference adjourned Until to-morrow. It is understood time there are prospects of amicable arrangements. Mr Mills, of the Union Company, New Zealand, was present.
