CRICKET.
On Saturday next, the United Cricket Club sends an eleven to Ormond to keep the Saturday competition fixture with the County Club. In past seasons, the meeting of these Clubs has always produced a keen contest, and next Saturday’s gamo should bo no exception to the rule. Both Ciubs can put strong elovens in the field, and Mr Caesar can always bo relied upon to provide a first-class wicket. We hear that many cricket enthusiasts intend proceeding to Ormond to witness the match. The following United players will leave town by brake at 12.45 sharp, and the gamo should commence at 2 o'clock : i’ortor, Kretschmer, Hill, Gibson (2), Macdonald, C. Priestley, Lung, Loomb, MeCredio, Whyte. Emergencies ; Iveson, Buker, L. C. Gouldsmith, Zacbariah. In a protest to tho Poverty Bay Cricket Association, the West End Club claims last Saturday’s match against United on tho ground time tho last-named Club pluyed a man who was not a rosident of tho United district.
A mooting of the Poverty Bay Cricket Association was hold on Saturday evening, and was attended by Messrs Hawkins (West End), in the chair, Barlow (Whataupoko), Hill (Haiti), Mucdonald (City), and W. Gibson, hon. sec. The chief business of tho evening was consideration of a letter from tho Hawke’s Bay Cricket Association ro tho affiliation of the Gisborne Associa-
tion to tho Napier body. A long discussion ensued. Messrs Hill and Gibson advocated affiliation to tho Hawke's Bay Association, urging that local interests would bo best servod by throwing in their lot with Napier. The Chairman, and Messrs Barlow and Macdonald considered that affiliation to the New Zealand Cricket Council was tho proper course to take, aud instanced tho fact that Hawke’s Bay had neglected to return Gisborne’s visits as proof that there was little to be got by affiliating with tho Napier Association. It was eventually resolved that the Secretary approach tho Cricket Council on the subject. Votes of thanks wero passed to Messrs Kretscbmar, Hill, Sheridan, and Barlow for services rendered in putting Victoria Domain in order for play, the first-named gentleman being specially singled out for praise lor the zeal he showed in forwarding tho interests of the gamo. It was decided to reviso the rules of tho xYssociation.
A report from Adelaide states that Clem. Hill, tne world-fumed Australian cricketer, will settle in South Alnea after finishing up the present cricket season in Australia.
The return match between teams representing Nuhuka and Mabia was played in Mr (iaiiiium’s paddock on Saturday, 29th November, and resulted in a win for the Nuhak. players by 24 runs. The total number of runs made were —Nuhaka 100, Mabia 76. Tho highest scores made for Nuhaka were W. Richardson 22, G. Coop 13, A. Richardson 9, and for Mahia Uaddum 17 and Weston 9 were the most successful with tho bat, and Messrs Glennie, Arundel and McColl did good sorvice with the ball. Messrs Chapman, W. Richardson, and J. Arthur secured the most wickets for tho visitors, and Mayo, Stacey and Black shaped well in the field. Tho day was a most unpleasant one, a howling nor’-wester raging from early morn till evening, at times making play almost impossible; but in spite of the weather much iutorest was taken in the match. Ample refreshments wore provided by the ladies of the locality. It has been arranged for two matches to be playod during Christmas week.
