WEEKLY HALF-HOLIDAY.

THREE HUNDRED AND FIFTY SHOPKEEPERS OPPOSED TO SATURDAY. By Telegraph—Preas Association. Christchurch, last night. A meeting of retail shopkeepers was held to-day in connection with the proposal to, change the weekly half-holiday from Thursday to Saturday. Tho meeting resolved that it was in favor of retaining Thursday as tho weekly half-holiday, and that the proposal to change would mean a serious loss to retailers. A number of shopkeeepers testified that Satur. day's trade was worth practioally all the rest of the week, and that a Saturday halfholiday would inconvenience the workers and farmers. A deputation was appointed to wait upon the City Council in the matter. A petition against the chaDge has been signed by 350 retailers, and will be presented to the Council. Evidently the people who are agitating in regard to the holiday are not aware that Saturday is the statutory day. The use of Thursday or any other day excepting Saturday is in reality a breach of the law, but to meet the wishes of the public in the matter the law regarding Saturday has not been put into force.
