PAKARAE JOCKEY CLUB
Tho advertised programme for the Pakarae races, to be field on Boxing-Day, appears in another column, and should assure a good day’s sport. The pro gramme includes the following events : Maiden Scurry, 4 furlongs; Flying Handicap, 6 furlongs ; Pakarao Cup, 1 mile ; District Handicap, ] mile; Forced Handicap, 1 mite. Mr Ernest Tardina has the arrangements iu hand for the meeting, which should attract a large gathering. A SMART CAPTURE.
Our Tulago Bay correspondent sends us word of a smart capture effected by Constablo McLeod, wiio is in charge oi the police station at that place. A native named Muhu was wanted on a charge ol theft, the offence having been committed at Wairoa, and within an hour after receiving information Constable McLeod had his man in custody. Accused was brought before Mr Morice, J.P., at Tolago yesterday morning, and remanded to Wairoa. Constablo McLeod brought his prisoner to town yesterday, and he was taken on to Wairoa in charge of Constablo Torr, of Waikaremoana.
WAIAPU RACING CLUB. Tho attention of horse-owners is directed to the programme of the Waiapu Racing Club, appearing in another column. As in previous years, an attractive card is presented, and the substantial prize-money offered should attract a good deal of competition. The programme is as follows ; Handicap Hurdles, of 15 sovs., 11 miles ; Maiden Plate, of Xl2, tlireequarters of a mile; Waiapu Cup, 30 sovs., H miles; Pony Race, 10 sovs., 7 furlongs ; District Welter, 15 sovs., 1 mile ; Flying Handicap, of 30 sovs., threequarters of a mile ; Consolation Handicap, of 10 sovs., 1 inilo. Tho dato of the meeting has been altered from previous yoars, and will bo hold on March 7th. Tho races will bo hold on the Mangakanoa racecourse, upon which a good deal of money has boon spent, and tho going promises to be remarkably good. The Club havo been unfortunate in losing tho services of Mr A. B. Jackson, tho popular secretary, who is loaving the district for a time. Mr M. P. Pool, a keon sportsman, will be found a worthy successor ,to Mr Jackson, and under tho capable management of the new secretary wo hope to seo tno Waiapu Club maintain its prestige. Tho following officers have been appointed for 1903 :—President, Mr K. S. Williams; Vice-Presidents, Messrs E. 11. lloudorson, B. Hayes, A. B. Williams, and E. R. Ludbrook; Judge, Mr E. R. Ludbrook ; treasurer, Mr T. Reedy ; starter, Mr W. Mclllroy ; clerk of scalos, Mr W. G. Walker; clork of course, Mr J. Hayes ; handicappor, Mr W. Kirkpatrick ; hon. surgeon, Dr. Davis; stewards, Messrs T. Reedy, G. S. Wood, D. W. Duff, S. Blackiaws, Hamioru Te Kapu, W. Kirkpatrick, J. Pettie, Kereopa Potaka, J. J. Fry, O. Butler, D. Macdonald, J. Smith, and G. Travers. TOLAGO SCHOOL. A commencement has been made with the additions to the Tolago Bay school. Messrß Mackrell and Colley, tha wellknown Gisborne contractors, have the work in hand. PERSONAL. Mr Jamos Smith, tho popular host of tho Sea View Hotel, Awanui, is at present visiting Gisborno. Mr A. B. Jackson was iu Gisborne for a couple of days this woek, on businoss in connection with his patent rain, wind and dust excluder. Tho patent has been highly approved by tho highest authorities in Australasia, and is likely to prove most remunerative to the Coastal syndicate holding tho rights of it. Mr Jackson returned to Tuparoa on Tuesday, and shortly procoeds South. Mr A. T. Hookey, the Gisborno representative of Messrs A. Clark and Sons, left for Auckland last ovoning. Mr G. Woods, of Tuparoa, was a passenger by the Omaporo on Sunday last from the South. He left the steamer at this port and rode overland. The Hon. J. Carroll left for the South by tho Mararoa last evoning. He proceeds to Wanganui, where ho will meet the Premier. Mr Soddon delivers a speech at Wanganui on Saturday evening, in which ho will deal with the Native land policy of tho Government. CATTLE FOR NAPIER.
A mob of two hundred store cattle en route from Mr T. S. Williams station, to Napier, arrived in Gisborne last ovenmg in charge of Mr Woodford. Tho cattle are to bo taken overland to Napier. COASI’AL MAIL SERVICE.
