BOWLING
THE PENNANT MATCHES,
At the bov/ling green this afternoon tho pennant competition will be concluded. Whataupoko meeting Haiti. After tho j former’s victory over the parent club, Wn-Cnupoko are pronounced favorites for this afternoon, but Haiti may bring off a surprise. Messrs Witty and Bright will skip the Haiti teams, and Messrs Simson and Dixon the Whataupoko. A committee meeting was held yesterday morning at the Masonic Hotel, and in view of the forthcoming tournament at Palmerston North the following Selection Committee were appointed Messrs Harding, Bright, Massey, Witty, and Dixon. Memoers intending to proceed to the tournament are requested to send in their names not later than che 11th inst. The committee also arranged to invite entries for Mr Hookey's prize, closing on the 11th inst., and for the colts' prize, entries closing on the 31st inst. A challenge match between Messrs Martin, McGowan, Dixon, and Simson (skip) and Massey, Hennossy, Gaudin, and Ponsford (skip) has been arranged, and will be played on Ponsford'a return from Auckland.
Tho Northern Bowling Association champion fours tournament is to be held at Palmerston North nextrmonth, commencing on the 12th, and as Gisborne is the present holder of the championship the gathering should have a good deal of local interest. It is to be regretted t <it the club has kept the Eelectionof itsre-pro-sentatives to so late a stage, as with tho Christmas and New Year holidays intervening, but little time is left for practice. Many of the clubs picked their teams at the commencement of the season, and tho players have been in constant practice. The standard of play will be much higher at the coming tournament than it was two yoars ago when the gathering was held in Gisborne, and the local men will require to be in the best of form in order to make a decent display against their opponents. They will also be at the disadvantage of playing on a strange green. It is generally recognised that Ponsford will be selected as skip, and the Committee in making that choice would, we feel °ure, be giving satisfaction. There is some talk of sending teams from Whataupoko and Haiti, but until the Gisborne team is decided upon, nothing can be done in this direction.
