ALLEGED MANSLAUGHTER.

RELEASE OF BAXTER. By Telegraph—Proas Association. Auckland, last night. The second trial of John Baxter, charged with manslaughter in connection with the death of Jeremiah Driscoll at Henderson on October 18, came on at the Supreme Court this morning. Mr Martin, for accused, pointed out that the evidence showed that Driscoll came towards Baxter with an axe. Baxter then struck him with his fist, and it was not usual in his experience for a fatal result to follow from a blow in the face. He submitted that the prisoner used the means of self-defence, which an ordinary man would have used. After a retirement of about five minutes tbo jury found the prisoner not guilty, and Baxter was accordingly discharged.
