THE ELINGAMITE WRECK
INQUIRY COMMENCES TO DAY.

The Countess of Ranfurly has returned from an extendod unsuccessful search for the missing boat of tho Elingamite. No. 1 lifeboat and a ruft were picked up and were brought to Auckland. At tho Elingamite inquiry, commencing to morrow, cvidenco will be given by about forty witnesses, including a large number of passengers. Tho inquiry will probably extend ovor noarly two weeks. Tho Collector of Customs in his application states that tho Elingamito left Sydney on November Oth with 08 of a crew and 106 passengers, and about one thousand tons of cargo. Her draught of water on leaving Sydney was 15ft 3in forward and 17ft lOin aft. On November 9th, at about 10.45 a.m., tho weather being thick fog, wind moderate from tho westward, sea moderate, tho course east-north-east by the compass, tho vessel steaming about four and a half knots, she struck iu a dense fog on one of tho rocky islets of the Three Kings, and foundered in about 20 minutes, the wreck resulting in the loss of some 43 lives or more, the vessel and her cargo.
