CHECK-MATING OUR PREMIER
SIR EDMUND BARTON’S RUSE,
By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright Melbourne, Nov. 25. The Ago says one of Sir E. Barton s minor successes when in England was the barrier ho presented to annexation by ambitious Premier Seddon in respect to Fiji. When ho met Lord Onslow and Mr Seddon at the Colonial Conference, lie told the Colonial Under-Secretary that, though Australia was not reaching out for Fiji at present, she could not consent to annexation by Now Zealand. Sir E. Barton is acquainted with the political designs of Berkeley and his character, in regard to the petition to the King to bo taken to England. Ho is certain the Imperial authorities will not alter the present system of government to any material extent for some tiino to come. Some day, however, the Fijian Constitution would have to be remodelled ; Australia would then have to mako her inliuencc felt.
