BISHOP OF AUCKLAND
NOMINATION OF REV. M. R MELIGAN.

After silting for several hours in camera, the Anglican .Synod unanimously decided to nominate the Rev. HI. R. N'eligan to he Bishop oi Auckland, m succession to the late Bishop Cowie.
The Rev. Mr N'eligan has lieen strongly recommended by the Bishops of London and Manchester, and he also consulted, before pcnnilting turnself to be nominated, the Bishop of Winchester and Bath and Wells (formerly of Adelaide, and Bishop Montgomery (formerly of Tasmania). He is in the prime of life -Icing a little over 40 years of age. He was educated at Trinity College, Dublin, where he graduated as JJ.A. in 1381 and Hr.A. in J3K7. He was ordained as deacon in 1881! and priest in 18S7 (in the diocese of York), lie was curate of St. Paul's, Sculeoales (York) from 188(1 to JBB7, Derehuii 1889 to 1890 ; Christchurch (London), 1890 to 189 1, and Vicar of St. Stephens, Paddington, since 189-J. Since he has been in charge of the parish of St. Stephens it lias progressed most remarkably. He has the reputation of being a brilliant, preacher. and ;l mostvigorous ami successful organiser, and he has at present three curates under him. The general opinion is that the new Bishop will take a very high position in the church life of the province of New Zealand. All the speakers at the Synod expressed great satisfaction at thu choice made.
