NUHAKA NORTH NOTES

The first cricket match of tho season was played iu the Moroni cricket ground on Saturday, November Bth, between teams representing Mahia and Nuhaka. Tho weather was fine, and a large number of tho sott-lers assembled on the ground, and much intorcst was displayed in the match, which resulted in a win for Nuhaka with six wickets to fall. Mr Glcnnio was captain of the visiting team, and Mr Chapman was captain of the winners. For Nuhaka Jefferson 31, Temple 27, Fooke 11, and Chapman 10, were the most successful with the but, and W. Richardson, Templo, and Jefferson secured the wickets. Arundle bowled well for the Mahia team, performing the hat trick in the second innings ; Glennie and Stacey also did good service with the ball, and Cartwright was very activo as wicket-keopor. Tho batsmen who reached double figures were P. MeColl 19, and F. Thompson 15. At tho conclusion of the game tho players and visitors proceeded to the shady bush, whero ample refreshments wero provided by tho ladies of tho district. Aftor justice had been done to the good things Mr Chapman called for

threo cheers tor tho visitors, which were hoartily given. Mr Glonnie, on behalf of of the Mahia team, thanked tho ladies and gontlemen for the good roception they had received, and hoped that when the return match was played tho tables would be turuod. Hearty cheers woro then given for the winning team and the ladies who provided tbo refreshments.

The members of tho Nuhaka Farmers’ Union who wero present thou withdrew from tho gathering to hold a meeting. Mr Proualock, Secrotury, presided, and stetod the meeting had been convened for the purpose cf nominating porsons to servo as a Waikokopu Harbor Board. Aitor some discussion it was resolved that tho names of Messrs Guddurn, Stewart, Proudlock, Cooper, and McKuin bo submitted to tho Governor lor appointment to tho Waikokopu Harbor Board. The meeting then adjourned. At a meoting held immodiatoly afterwards, on a motion of G. Coop, seconded iy C. (Chapman, it was resolved that a cricket club be torined. Messrs Chapman, Jefferson, and Fletcher wero appointed captain, vice-captain, and secretary, respectively ; the above officers, together with Messrs Btowart and l’ait for the general committee, to do all things necessary to make the club a success. Messrs Chapinun, Jofferson, and Fletcher were appointed a selection committpc. It was also resolved that a Tennis Club bo formed, and a committeo was selected as follows : Mrs Tait, Misses Jobliu and L. Reynolds, Messrs Jefferson, G. Coop, and J, Reynolds. Mr J. Reynolds was appointed secretary, and was requested to call a mooting as soon as convenient for tho purpose of selecting ground suitable for a court and necessary requisites. On Monday evening a number of settlers wero rather indignantly surprised to loarn that Sir W. Russell would address tho electors at Morere, tho short notice preventing a large number from attending. Thero were about thirty persons present at the meeting, and Mr Sloan was elected to the chair. The speaker received an attentive hearing, and at the close of his address, in replying to questions, stated that lio was not in favor of prohibition, was not in favor of light railways, was not in favor of religious instruction being given in Government schools. Ho was of opinion that the Morero Hot Springs liad a great future, and stated that if returned ho would endoavor to havo all moneys placed on tho estimates for the purpose of effecting improvements in the district expended. Sir William was given a vote of thanks.
