ON PROHIBITION IN NORSEWOOD

ON PROHIBITION IN NORSEWOOD.

(To the Editor of the Times.)

Sir, —1 notice a meeting, at which Canon Webb was chairman, denies my statement that “ No Licenso ” was an utter failure at NorsewooJ. 1 would like to know who composed tho meeting ; whero they a few followers of Canon Webb’s, or where they newcomers to Norsewood, who havo no real knowledge of what really happened under Prohibi tion about 17 ycurs ago, for I cannot Le lieve that any fair-minded old residents would deny my statement ? If my state rnent was not correct, why did tho old residents of Makatoko, Ormondville, and Norsowood petition tho Government tu get the throe villages mado into a borough for the purpos*- of getting the old licenses going again, which the Government did as requested by the petition, and under tho new conditions of thiners a new Licone ing Committee was set up according to law, which gave the now committee power to grant the licenses back again without waiting the full period of threo years, and not only did the new committee grant the old licenses back again, but increased them, and gave a- oxtra license to Norsewood and an extra .no to Makatoko. To my knowledge, the -lotition was very generally signed, and no effort was made to stop tho licenses being ro-instated, for the residents had got fairly sick of the littlo delivery cart coming round and delivering two or threo gallons hero and there every day, without saying anything about tbo numerous sly-grog shops, which I could easy enough mention if required, —I am, oto., W. Evaxs.
