By, Telegraph—Press Association— MARTON, last night. Mr F. W. Isitt will be nominated for the Hawke’s Bay seat in the interests of the Prohibition party. WOODVILLE, last night. Mr O’Meara was awarded a vote of thanks and confidence at his meeting last night. He caused a sensation by reading a letter from Mr Gould, who is contesting ihe seat also in the 1 il>eral interest, complaining that lie iiad not received a reward for the nineteen years’ service in the Liberal cause and that. he had incurred alienation from professional clients of the Canscrvative, and therefore payable, class, and that if passed over again, he intended to .sever his connection' with politics on the Liberal side, to resign ,thc secretaryship of the Liberal Federation, to.isell out, and begin business in some town where his Liberal proclivities were not known. This lie would not do, however, until after the- present election, and lie would do his utmost to .secure Mr O'Meara’s return.
A meeting of Mr Charles Hall’s friends decided to present him with ~n illuminated address on his leaving to take up his residence in Danncvivke.

At, the Methodist Synod host, evening a resolution was carried urging all members and adherents ol the Church U> vote for the suppression of the liquor traffic 'at the forthcoming elections .and to obtain from all Parliamentary candidates, a definite statement as to whether they will support a Goivernmehti or private member’s hill, giving the electors of the colony the opportunity of deciding the finest ion of Bible reading in schools with a eon- , science clause.
• The hrickniakers and elaymakers of Palmerston and district have formed a union with the object of regulating wages and remedying other grievances not directly indicated at the meeting; A nine-roomed house at Longbuni, owned hy Mr George Richardson, and occupied by bins haigent as a grocery store and hoarding-house, was totally destroyed by lire yesterday afternoon, together with the ml.joining bakehouse .where the file originated. The slock and part of the furniture were saved, but tile stock was considerably damaged by removal. The insurances arc —stock and furniture Xffim- in the Phoenix, building..£2")U in the North British. • The owner of the .bakehouse •was i n Palmerston when the fire occurred.

The’ Anglican Diocesan Synod opened yesterday. A resolution was - carried, approving of the objects of the Society for the promotion of Bible--1 teaching in State schools, to enable schools to be. opened with the Lord’s Prayer, and that simple lessons be gi--1 ven on certain week-days. Parliamentary candidates are being asked to 'support a referendum on the -subject,, 7 CHRISTCHURCH, last night.
Mr Clias. Taylor, labor candidate for one.of the city..seats, addressed " the electors last night, and was accorded a vote of thanks and confidence. Mr J. S. Myers,-a candidate-for the Avon "constituency, gave his first address -last, night. He stated that lie was an out-and-out Liberal. A moiioii .was carried to the effect that the, meeting could not pledge itself-to support the speaker. Harry Johnston was committed to trial this morning on several charges,of misappropriating sums of money, received from the customers of the firm of M. O’Brien and C0,,-- by whom the ■ accused was employed. , Peter,, I.edsham was also committed for trial on a charge of not keeping proper hooks
prior to his bankruptcy. The Premier was presented with an address of welcome from the citizens of Christchurch, at the railway station tliis morning, hy the-Mayor. Mr Beddon -reciprocated the kind expression of welcome, and referring to the presentation of the address to him here, pi tor to his departure for England, said that the confidence ’’lhen expressed in him Pad been of great assistance in the Old Country. - He trusted that I.lie •rood feeling existing between the citizens of Christchurch and himself.would long' continue. ■ Hearty cheers we. c given for Mr’and Mrs Seddon.
