LAND BOARD.

QUARTERLY MELTING,

Tho quarterly meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Land Board was held on Satuiday. Present: The Coiumit-sioner of Crown Lands (Mr E. Gold Smith), and Messrs ft. It, Groomo and G. Matthewson. A FREEHOLD WANTED.

Mr J. W. Nolan waited on the Board and said he bad made application at a previous meeting to turn a perpetuallease into fieehold, but the Board had refused, referring him to sub section 3 of tbe Act of 188.7. He pointed out that if

the Board looked at section 16 of the 1887 Act it would be seen that if improvements were eifucted tho change could he made. The Commissioner said tho freehold could be acquired now when improvements were completed. There was a ruling in tho Supreme Court to that effect, The Act of 1883 was amended by the Act of 1887.

Mr Nolan said he only wanted an expression from tbe Board. Mr Grooiue said there must have been something for the idea that tho chango could not bo made to have got abroad.

The Commissioner said there was no doubt ordinary perpetual leases could bo i timed into freehold.

Mr Nolan said be would make application at the ue-xt meeting of tho Board Before 1887, the leases would no doubt all have been special leases. CORRESPONDENCE. P. and W, O’Regan applied for 311 acres adjoining section 3, block XVI., Hikurangi sub division. Mr Sievwright appeared in support of tho application, stating that Messrs O’Rogan found their section insufficient. Tbe Commissioner said other people had applied for this land, and they Imd promised to offer it on the optional system. Tho Board would get it into tbe market as soon as possible.

Mr Cruickshank, representing the occupiers of Section 1, Block VI., Tabora, stated that ho heard that the road to the ■section was not to be gone on with, and he wished to know if tho Board would lecommend that it be comploted. The settlers could not get on with the clearing nf tho laud if tho road was not completed. Tho Board decided to make-a reoommondation to the Roads Department that the road be extended a further two miles. An application to transfer tho interest of tho late P. W. Stephenson in the same section to V/. J- Rangor was granted, subject to tho two other partners’ approval. H. T. Brill appliod to be allowed to purchase Sections 11 and 12, Block XIV., town of Buckley. Tho Commissioner said the sections woro reserved, and the Board could not deal with thorn. Being a reserve, tho Board could only lease from year to year. It was docided to reply to that effect.

Section 69, Pet a Orilii, Section 67, W t Hone, Section 12, Tamo Rakiroit, Section 63, Ilori Mania, Section 07, Tiuiroto village. Approved. RANGEIPS REPORT. Tito Crown Lands Ranger reported on sixty-two holdings in Ngatapa and Motu Survey Districts. The Commissioner remarked that tiie reports were generally j satisfactory, but the defaulters should be notified. TRANSFERS. Transfers wire granted as follows: A. 11. Campbell to K. F. Standish, section 1, block IX, Whuiigata S.D. Mr Nolan appeared for applicants. P. T. Hallan to G. Rasmussen, section 17. Motu village. J. R. Cbadwick to H. L. Pemberton, sec. 6. block IV., Mangaoporo S.D. MISCELLANEOUS. 11, Reavis was granted four months’ extension of time in which to erect a building on his section at ti.o Willows. J. C. Woodward applied for sections 20, 19, lb, 17, 24, 25, 20, 27, 23, 29, 30 Patutabi, of ati area of 2} acres. They were vested in the Education Board, hi d the teacher’s residence was built on them. It was decided ttiat the application io stand over for the District Surveyor to report.

W. Nevill, Waipiro Bay. applied for 10b acres of land, being Crown award in Aorongiwai block. It was decided m have tho land offered under the optional system.
