Addressing a meeting of three tiiousanu peojne in the Philharmonic Hall, m the evening, General Botha, achnowiedgmg Hie enthusiasm, reiterated ins remarks as to Kruger’s integrity. lie said that the ex-president had lent £-lu,uO(j sterling to the 'Transvaal, which he wouiu never recover. He added that tiie statesman ot the war was Mr Steyn. If the Boer people were praised to-day it was, lie saiu, Mr Steyn who had made them worthy of the praise. He concluded : ; “ Nobody can doubt that we will remain loyal. German sympathy is united to that of tiie people’s.” General De Wet declared tliat the worst was past, but that tiie situation was stili dark, lie eulogised the women for enabling the Boers to prolong the struggle. They were, he said, so brave, that he once had said that they should hate laws permitting a man, after the war, to take two wives. He pleaded for a waggon and two oxen for each Boer, 'i hen the people would not go under. Tickets and post-cards bearing the generals’ portraits, realised twentyseven thousand marks.
The generals sent telegrams to Messrs Kruger and Stcyn. The most striking feature of the visit is that, while continually protesting their loyalty t-o England, the generals associate exclusively with Germans who are England's bitterest enemies.
