The man who bu-. been wandering about Gisborne lately, and who was yesterday committed to tho Auckland Asylum has a pathetic history. Not long ago he came into a good sum of money, running into four figures. He feli in love with a young lady, who remained true to him whilst his money lasted, and then left him. This preyed on his mind a good deal, and in a great measure was to be attributed his present sad position.
At tho Theatre Royal to marrow evenng, at 8.15, Alissrs ‘Cooper and McDer mott will give a sncretl limelight inertaiumem, including tho “ Sign of the Cross” (32 magnificent tableaux), and beautifully c. -jred living pictures. The land sale to be hold by Messrs Williams and Kettle on November Ist promises to be one of the most important ever held in the district. Tho additions to tile list include some first class building sites on the Haiti, the property of Mr P. Mooney, also four sections in the Ormond township, all fenced, and close to the school. Those sections aro well situated, and should find a ready sale. There arc also seven quarter-acre sections in the heart of the Patutahi township, which should prove a good investment. Mr Abbottsford Smith’s bandy little farm of 131 acres at Pouawa will also bo offered. The property is well watered, and has a six-roomed dwelling and outbuilding 011 it, and is only about five miles from the Gisborne post-office. The opportunity to secure first-class town and suburban properties should not bo allowed to pass by those in search of the same.
Mr Ewen Cameron is issuing circulars to all sheepfarmers in the district with reference to purchasing stock for shipment to South Africa. The prices offered aro contingent on a given number of stock being available, and farmers are requested t° reply as early as possible. The circular states Should my client be successful in opening up a market for moat of this class, he will be prepared to operate largely during the coming season, and will give preference in dealing later to thoso who support him in November. I need hardly point out to you the importance of opening up a new market, and will bo obliged if you will favor mo with a re£ly at once as to whether you are willing to sell on tho above terms, and, if so, state approximate numbers of cattle and sheep you will have for delivery in November.
A sailor named Alexander Peterson wa3 yesterday committed to tho Auckland Asylum. Ilis eccentric behaviour has recently attracted some attention, and caused a good deal of alarm. He wat before the Court last week for being found by night on the premises of the Hon. Mr Carroll, and was imprisoned for the offenco. On Thursday evening, he resumed his wandering practices, and ex plored shops ond dwellings at his own sweet will. In Childers road, ho went through two houses and alarmed the inmates, but his freaks were of a harmless kind. He found the second house to his liking, and, entering the bedroom of the lady of the house about 9 o’clock, decided to take up his quarters there. Tho lady snatched up her baby, and got the assistance of neighbors. When they arrived, Peterson had undressed, got into bed, and was settling down for a good sleep. In response to a knock, be opened the door and let his captors in quietly, at tho same time remarking, ■“ This is a very nice place.” When asked to dress, he did so without any opposition. Peterson will be taken to Auckland to-day in tho Waibora, in charge of a local constable.
