WELCOME TO SIR E. BARTON.
A VERY MIXED RECEPTION
By Telegraph Press Association Copyright Sydney, Oct. 17.
An immense gathering was held in the i Town Hail for the purpose of meeting and welcoming Bir K. Barton. The Mayor presided. The reception was of a j very mixed character, the enthusiasm of Sir E. Barton’s supporters being counterbalanced by a large section of malcontents who kept up a running fire of adverse comments and boohbooing. At times i they took charge of the meeting, provoking Sir E. Barton to spirited denunciations j of them as traitors, Fenians, and other un- I complimentary epithets. The speeches generally were complimentary to Sir E. Barton and his mission. Sir E. Barton reviewed the Imperial Conference, and replying to criticisms, said that he was not afraid to face the light of public opinion. "
