BAND CONTEST.
(To the Editor of the Times.) Sir, —Thero seems to be some iittle misunderstanding in certain quarters about tho conditions of tho forthcoming Band Contest at Masterton, or the suggestion would not be rnado that a representative band for Gisborne should bo formed out of our two bands. The contest rules absolutely prohibit this. Each band would havo to go on its own merits. Impnrtial critics, judging by recent performances, declare that tho Riflos Band, though vastly improved of late, is not yet up to contest form, and advise the band not to eompeto this year, but to send its conductor to tho contest as a meuns of preparation for a future occasion. As the City Band, oncouraged by favorable criticisms of its performances at the Coronation Concert, had decided to enter for the contest, and appealed for publio support before the Rifles Band took the matter up, it is to be hoped that the Rifles Band will gracefully stand aside on the present occasion, and accept the advice tendered to send only its conductor. The townspeople cannot afford to send two bands, the turn of the Riflos Band will come, and no doubt meet with tho same hearty support. —I am, otc., Acral.
