SIR JOSEPH WARD’S VISIT.
By Telegraph Press Association. New Plymouth, last night. There was largo crowds present ut the ofliciul opening of tho new railway station this afternoon by the Acting Proinior. Tho Mayor, Mr Hnckerill, presided, and besides Sir J. Ward and Lady Ward thore wero also a numoer of prominent citizens and their wives present. Sir J. Ward made a happy speech, a congratulatory one on tho progress of tho district, after which Lady Ward performed tho official ceremony of opening tho door of trie station buildings. Cheers were then given for the Minister and Lady Ward. Tho station and yards cost ,£20,420, including largo reclamation works, mid now afford convenient facilities for dealing with trade. Afterwards Mr Ward was entertained at a public luncheon, which was attended by a largo and representative gathering. Lady Ward was also entertained by tho ladies of New Plymouth at an “ at homo ” in the Theatre Royal. A deputation from tho Borough Council waited on the Minister to-day and asked for an esplanade along tho reclamation works at tho railway station und for tho street afi’ccted by these wqrks ; also for a site for u band rotunda. As Sir J. Ward is busy the matter was postponed till to morrow, when ho will inspect the localities affected. Ho was also waited upon earlier by Messrs Connett and Morton, representing tho Producers' Freezing Works Company, who asked for con sidoration on account of tho haulage charge of Is 6d from tho works to tho wharf, making with wharfage 2s fid, thus handieupping tho works as compared with Patea, whore only Is for wharfage was charged. Sir J. Ward promised to inquire into the matter on his roturn to Wellington. He goes North by tho Tutanekai tonight. A CANDIDATE RETIRES. Mr Joseph Mackay, retires from tho contest for Egmont in favor of Mr Jennings, who to-day intimated that ho resigns tho Council to morrow. It is rumored that tho Rev. Sawyle, another candidate for Egmont, also retires.
