THE BAND COMPETITION
(To the Editor of the Times.) .Sir,—lt nas been decided that, Gisborne shall be represented at Uie forthcoming Band competition to be held at JVlasterton, but this can only be done if some public spirit is shown. The City Baud (formerly the Garrison) is at present particularly efficient possessing as it does a roll of some tweuty-four members, amongst, whom nine soloists of merit can tie numbered and a most efficient quartette obtained. There should lie no reason why entries set apart for the above might not lc made, and yet there is cue, and an important, one —,ack of money. Our bandsmen, however, arc wiling to leave, and though feeling capable of •bringing back honors won, ar? hardly in a position to bear the whole expense entailed by a visit else, here and it is for this reason I would suggest that, apart from the solm.tation of support at the lands of tnose able and no doubt willing to make liberal donations, that the* themselves should give a series of open-air concerts, at, wlii di collections could lie made. Now as .lie entries' close almostrimmediately, and the test pieces will not be procurable until after these arc made, early effort is necessary if souething is to tie done. Should a denude desire on the part of ihc public he made manifest, the Band purpose going into constant and regmar practice straight away. Surely assistance v.T lie forthcoming— I am etc., MUS.GJS.
