In the match against South Africa at Johannesburg, the home team scored 454 in the first innings, and the Australians 296.
In a follow-on tho visitors obtained 374 for seven wickets. Hill made 142. They then declared tho innings closed. South Africa, in their second innings, lost four wickets for 101. Tho match was drawn.
