BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The ordinary meeting of the Borough Couneil was hold last evening, the following mcmbcis be ng present: Ilis Worship tbo Mayor (Mr J. Townley), and Crs. Mason, Harding, Kennedy, Miller, Jones, ami Wbinray. RKI'OHTS. Tbo Nightwatchman reported that he had been on duty every evening during the pust fortnight, and there had been no tiros.
Mr J. It. Little, Inspector of Nuisances, reported us follows : —“ Since your last meeting I have been inspecting all over the Borough, and find everything at the present time in a very satisfactory condition. Dr. DoLisle, Health Officer lor this district, arrived from Napier on tiro Bth inst. to mako a general inspection of the Borough and surrounding districts. A report of the same will no doubt be furnished to your Council at an early date.”
The Mayor said that Dr DeLislo had visited Waihirero with himself, but had reserved his opinion. At the timo of their visit there appeared to bo an abundant supply of water. OVERSEER'S REPORT. The Overseer reported as follows : “ Harris street: I havo put this road in hand, and hope to bo metalling it in two or throo days. Lowo street footbridgo : This bridgo has become unsafe for traffic. If the Council cannot see its way to repair it, I think it wiso to advertise the bridgo us unsafe for traffic. Mill road : This road is ploughed and ready for the road-grader. With the Council’s consent, specifications for the gravel might bo prepared, and tenders called for next meeting. Aberdeon road : In response to your instructions, the grader has been set to work oil this road. I have had the road ploughed and all roots and stumps possible removed, so that no delay should occur with the working of the machine. The machino was got to work on Wednesday, Bth inst. Air Barington expects to finished with Aberdeen road to morrow (Wednesday, 15th). I would like the Public Works Committee to inspect the work done by this machine, together with the nature of the work, for future informa-
tion in works of this kind. I may say I think tbo machino has been-ably worked, and there is littlo causo for complaint. In work of this kind, where tho horses are now to the work, the same results cannot bo expected the first day or two. On tho whole, I think things have worked smoothly. As instructed by tho Council, tho grader will bo taken to Mill road on tbo completion of Aberdeen road. In order to follow up this work and compote with the busy Beason of tho year now before us, it will bo necessary to keep on a few extra hands for a few weeks.” Tho Overseer was instructed to inspect the Lowe street bridge, and see what repairs could bo temporarily mado to it. Or Mason said that tho bridgo must be kept open, as it was used a great deal. Cr Harding was sure that tho public would subscribe to a new bridge. Tbe Council need not do much in regard to the bridge until it was seen what the Government wero going to do with the road on the other side. It was decided to call for tenders for gravelling the newly-formed portion of Aberdeen road.
The Mayor said that it wovld bo necessary during tho busy season coming on to havo a few more hands. Cr Miller urged that rnoro attention should bo given to tarring. This was a most important work, and he wanted to see it referred to tho Public Works Committee.
Cr Kennedy: You mean tno Finance Committee.
Cr Miller: No, I mean the Works Committee. AVe have a certain amount of money to spend, and this is the most important work. Cr Harding: Wo are all anxious to see the streets and pathways improved, but the question of ways and means must be considered. I think extra men should bo employod. Cr Mason : Yes, thoro is plenty to do. Cr Harding suggested that a list of the most pressing works should bo submitted, and more attention paid to tho upper end of tho town. No one had a particular wish to see tho monoy all spent at the wharf end. Ho thought that it would be a good thing to get the Overseer to submit a list of tho works. The Council must undertake some now works as well as keep in repair tho old, Tho Mayor said that tho matter was one of finance. No doubt thero were many things to bo done. Tho Overseer was instructed to prepare a list of tho most necessary work.
