A WELLINGTON CANDIDATE,
By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, last night. Dr Chapplo announces himself as a candidate for the Newtown seat, A NOISY MEETING. Per Press Associatiin. Dunedin, last night. Mr Charles Samson, another candidate for Taieri, addressed a largo and somewhat noisy meeting at Mosgiel. Ho supported the whole Government policy, and defended them from charges of extravagance, although not actually announcing himself as a Government follower. He favors Bible-reading in schools, would abolish the totaiisator, and would support a Bill for national Prohibition. Tho candidate told the chairman that ho did not desire a vote of thanks, and tho meeting closed.
AN OPPOSITION MEMBER.
(Per Press Association.) Milton, last night.
Mr Jas. Allen, M.H.R., addressod a very large meeting of Bruce electors at Milton to-night, ilia speech was mainly a criticism of the Government administration, and referred at some length to the policy the Opposition throughout tho colony were now supporting. Ho advocated the reform of tho Upper House, and great care in expenditure, economical and judicious railway construction, cheaper lines to open up the country, and avoid anco of the expenditure of luxuries with respect to lands. Ho favored an optional system of lease or occupation with a right to purchase, with a provision against aggregation into large estates, and a continuation of the land for settlement policy, He would continue tho Advance to Settlers Department, and endeavor by cautious management to prevent loss. A voto of tbaoks and confidence was carried unanimously.
