IMPORTANT CONFERENCE
SIR E, BARTON’S VIEWS,
By Telegraph— Press Association—Copyrigh:
Brisbane, Oct. 13. _ Sir Edmund Barton, in a further interview, said that it seemed to him that the Conference was not by any means the unsatisfactory one that some people had endeavored to designate it. It had come to an important, and ho thought a very gratifying decision, which would result in binding the Empire evon more closely than at present, and besides it afforded an excellent opportunity for securing the views of the representatives of the. selfgoverning colonies throughout the Empire and of Imperial Government matters Mutual interest in future conferences would probably bo more important. Tfyo view was expressed that future conferences should be held at intervals not exceeding j four years, the Secretary of State to make | necessary arrangements. It was originally fntended that conferences should be I hold every three years, but it was concluded that there might be difficulty in securing a representative conference in that period. If, however, a question o f emergency arises they may bo held every three years. The agreement is to last for ten years. Provision is made that at the end of the eighth or any subsequent year notice may be given of a desire to terminate. There is nothing to that effect in the agreement, but it is to be taken that the squadron will be the only force in use in Australian waters, but if the necessity arises there will be a larger force. Dealing with the question of stations Sir Edmund Barton said that in times
of war, operations are to be in the waters of Australasia, China, East Indies, where they can be most- elm-Uvo, against hostile vessels threatening the interests of Australasia and New Zealand.
Sir E. Barton added : “We were assured during the discussion that the Imperial Government would endeavor to make Australia and New Zealand
the basis for the coal supplies for the squadron in the Eastern waters.”
