DISTRESS IN CAPE COLONY. CAPETOWN, October 12. Great distress prevails in the northwestern and north-eastern districts oi Cape Colony. Sugar is selling at one shilling a pound. The Government are importing traction engines to be utilised for the transport of supplies. FEDERAL PREMIER’S RETURN. BRISBANE, October 13. Sir Edmund Barton, on arrival here, was welcomed on behalf of the Federal and State Parliaments. Interviewed as to the work of the Imperial Conference, he stated that there was nothing of importance to add to the facts already cabled. He refrained from expressing any opinion as to the results. He staled that the statement was untrue that the speeches he delivered in Canada were more flamboyant than those delivered in England. ’ He advocated reasonable Imperialism, not a reckless tendency to rush into quarrels and disputes without considering tiie causes. He favored cohesion with tiie Empire by all reasonable and wise means, consistent with the preservation of our own autonomous government.
STATE LOANS. BRISBANE, October 13. Mr David Elder, who was a passenger by the Aorangi, states that the opinion was held amongst London financiers that the conversion of State loans on the security of the Commonwealth would have the effect of making difficult the placing of any Stale loans at a satisfactory price.
BOATING FATALITIES. MELBOURNE, October 13
The wreck of the missing fishing boat has been found. There is no trace of tiie bodies. A pleasure boat capsized in the Yarra, and a girl ntuned Perriman and a, youth named Lahey were drowned. ECCLESIASTICAL APPOINTMENT. London, Oct. 13. Tho Rev. Joseph Armitago Robinson, Canon of Wostininstor, has been appointed Dean of Westminster, in succession to Dean Bradley. BIBLE SOCIETY. Revs. F. W. Macdonald, senior secretary of the Wesleyan Missionary Society, and H. A. Haynes, British Bible Society Home Superintendent, leave England in March on a visit to tho Bible Societies and Australian auxiliaries. PAVING BLOCKS. The Westminster Council have accepted tho New South Wales Agent-General's offer of 900 New South Wales paving blocks for the purpose of a competitive test with American blocks. BOER GENERALS. Berlin, Oct. 13. The Cologne Gazetto states the Boer Generals, in tho most unambiguous fashion, refused to ask tho British Minister at Berlin to apply for an audience with the Kaiser. HEAVY RAIN. Sydney, Oct. 13. Tho gale lias blown out, and tho rain has ceased. Nearly six and a half inches were recorded in Sydney. The heavy falls were confined to the coast, and there were scattered showers in many other parts.
