POLITICAL NOTES.
| Special to Times. | Wellington, last night. Mr Atkinson presented a petition to Parliament this aflornoon from a numbor of Native land-owners in the Wairarapa, praying that tho Lands for Settlements Amendment Act, undor which Nativeowned lands may bo compulsorily acquired, he not passed into law, on tho ground that it woujd bo a violation of tho treaty of Waitangi. Tho petition was referred to the Native Affairs Coramittoo, which, with tho permission of tho House, is sitting continually. Tho Legislative Council Act Amendment Bill providos that where tho term of office of tho Speaker of tho Legislative Council expires, when Parliament is not in session, ho shall hold office until fourteen days after the commoncment of the noxt session. In tho ease of tho seat of a member of tho Council becoming vacant during his term of offico as Speaker or Chairman of tho Committco, and ho is immediately re-appointed member of tho Council, his term of office will continue. The Chairman of Committees (Mr W. C. Smith) is to act as Speaker on a vacancy occurring. An animated dobatc is anticipated on the Bill, as I understand the Minister of Education will bo a candidate for tho position of Speaker of the Council.
