The first ; under tho Opium Prohibition Act of last session was hoard at the Magistrate s Court to-day. The polico yesterday arrested at Kumara a Chinaman just arrived from Dunedin with 19 tins of opium in his possession. Ho was charged with importing opium suitablo for smoking, and with carrying it with intent to evade tho prohibition of the article. After a lengthy hearing tbo Magistrate dismissed tho information, holding that there was no proof of tho Chinaman having endeavored to sell, and tho Act did not make it an offeueo for a person to have opium in his possession, RECORD PRICES.
At tho salo of fat stock to-day tho highest prices on record for over 25 years were reached. Best bullocks averaged over £l9.
