FARMERS’ UNION.
A meeting of the Provincial Executive of tho Poverty Bay Farmers’ Union was held on Saturday. Present: Messrs W. A. Hood (voted to the chair), E. D. Bilham, C. J. Parker, H. N. Lysuar, Hutchinson, Retlpath, and L. Clayton (secretary). Mr A. H; Wallis wrote apologising for his absence through pressure of business. The general secretary of the Union wroto stating the next meeting of the Colonial Executive would be held at Palmerston North on September 25th. The general secretary forwarded a circular which has been sent to tho different Freezing Companies throughout the colony in reference to Government grading of mutton, new markets, and distribution of meat in England. Tho manager of the Dairyman wrote accepting the Executive’s offer of articles upon the native land question. The Hon. Jas. Carroll wrote in reference to the telephone lines in Poverty Bay, hoping that upon further investigation it would be found that tho lines in question have shown a surplus, and stating that he had referrod the communication to the Postmaster-General. The balance-sheet of the Union of New Zealand showed a credit of 13s 4d. A subscription list, headed by a circular, stating that at the Colonial Conference the organising secretary, Mr Arthur Glass, tendered his resignation, and the Conference unanimously decided that some substantial recognition of tho very valuable services rendered to the Union by Mr Glass should be made. The list was laid upon the table for the support of members.
Mr D. Buddo, chairman of the Frozen Meat Committee, wrote asking the Execu--1 tive to appoint two representatives who could give evidence or information of the district that would assist the Committee. The Ormond branch forwarded the following resolutions : —“ Stock Sales.— That our delegate, Mr Hood, be asked to appoint a committee to interview the auctioneers re selling together, etc. Parliamentary Picnic. —That our delegate ask for an enquiry re the management:, which has caused considerable dissatisfaction to this branch. Dairy Cattle.—That it is the opinion of this branch that Government should bo asked to provide a sum of money annually to the A. and P. Society, to be given as premiums for the best bulls for the use of dairymen in this district. That a committee, consisting of Messrs Hood, Malone, Bond, Brosnaban, Reid, and Graham, be arranged for importing a Holstein bull for the use of members of this branch.” The Waimata Valley branch forwarded the following resolutions :—•' It is the opinion of this branch that the Gisborne branch had no right to entertain representatives of Parliament under the auspices of the New Zealand Farmers' Union, and that it considers the entertaining of the Parliamentary representatives by the Gisoorne branch was totally unnecessary, and altogether outside the province of the Union.”
The Tolago Bay branch forwarded resolutions as puboshe-d in the Times. The resolution in reference to the taking of lands was approved of as a general resoluion, provided it called upon taking no special estate wi-hjut free will offering. The Chairman thought a paid secretary of the Union very necessary. He mover! :
