BARTON’S SPEECH

AN APPEAL TO PATRIOTISM,

By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright Ottawa, Sept. 13. A crowd of people farewelled Sir Edmund Barton. Replying to the Board of Trade address presented by the President, Mr Coates, formerly an Australian, Sir Edmund Barton said that he hoped Canada and Australia were resolved to give to the maintenance of the powers and prestige of an empire—equal and competitive assistance, not for the sako of what the ill-blooded would call toadyism, hut for the sake what the clean-blooded would call patriotism. (Cheers).
